Vintage Charles Bird King Native American 1836 Lithograph, framed, as is

This is an old lithograph of an Indian made in the early 19th century from an oil painting by Charles Bird King. All the original paintings were lost in a fire in Washington in 1865. They were meant as illustrations for McKenny & Hall's "North American Indians". The frame outside measures 20" x 14 3/4" and inside of the mat measures 14 3/4" x 9 1/4". I have never had it out of the frame and there are reflections in my photos which spoil some of my pictures.

To the lower left under the image is Painted by C. King" and on the lower right is "Lehman & Duval Lithrs Phila. At the bottom is the title " ONG-PA-TON-GA', "Or The Big Elk", Chief of the Omahas", Philadelphia Published by EyC. Biddle", and "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1836 by E. Biddle in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Eastern District of Pa.

There is discoloring throughout but this does not interfere with the image. The most serious flaws are two tears in the paper. The upper one starts on the left edge at the level of the neck and travels across to the edge of the man's lower lip, beyond the nose, and then up to the lower eyelid of his left eye, missing the nose completely. The lower tear is at the left side level with the bottom of the image and 2 from the edge of the mat. Both tears have been touched up with.

White while the tear through the image has been touched up with colors matching the skin of the man and is not noticeable unless examined closely. The image itself is 9 1/4" x 8 7/8". This is one of the earliest lithographs, dated 1836.
