Large Makah Nootkn Great Weave Native American Indian Northwest Coast Basket
What excites me about this Northwest Coast basket, (from the Makah Nootkn Tribe) is its size. It might be the largest one I've seen in a long time with this style weave. It is in excellent condition. It is slightly misshapen, and I do mean slightly, which is usually common in this size basket. It is approximately 10 1/2 inches in diameter and stands approximately 6 1/2 inches tall at its tallest. As you can see there is fading to the outside of the basket, Another common thing that you find with these baskets. Please look at my photographs, you can see the intensity of the colors on the inside of the basket. Except for what I have already stated this basket is in excellent condition. It has a very tight weave. I believe this basket to be from the 30s to 50s. You experts out there will know. I love the design where the large bird is attacking the large fish.
