The tribes along the eastern sierra and into the surrounding deserts would erect pole funerary poles at the one year anniversary of a a family member's death. Baskets were woven especially for this purpose and then placed on each rung and a fire was lit and the baskets were burned in honor of the deceased.

Since most of these were burned very few survived for a variety of reasons so they are very rare and seldom seen. A NICELY SIZED RARE AND EXTRA FINE FUNERARY BASKET IN EXCELLENT CLEAN CONDITION. Finely woven basket for the Mohave desert of southern California.

Coiling counter clockwise it is made of willow on a willow and deer tail grass inside foundation with a heavily "ticked" rim and features the funerary poles as is required for these special baskets.
