Antique Native American Apache Hide Bow Case & Quiver Sinew Sewn Late 1800's
The bow case is 47 inches in length. The quiver is aproximently 25 inches in length x 6 inches wide at the opening and 3-1/2 inches wide at the end of the quiver. They are both very finely sewn with sinew and have aproximently 11 stiches per inch. The hide used to make this set was a white brain tanned buckskin (not smoked) that is now stiff and brittle in some areas from getting wet while in use. This bow case and quiver at one time was glued onto a display board backed with red felt and some of the red color from the felt has stained both the bow case and quiver (see photos).
Most of the glue but not all of it has been removed and some of the holes have been stabilized using a natural homemade deer hide glue. The quiver has 3 holes with the one at the bottom by the fringe being the biggest (1-1/2 x 3).
It also has several tears and one old native patch repair. The bow case has one old native patched area and 1 old native sinew sewn hole 1 inch in length. There is also a very brittle and torn area in the center of the bow case that is on both sides that was stabilized with hide glue. The opening of the bow case is also torn at an angle and it has no strap.
Because of all its issues I consider the condition to be fair but despite all the issues this bow case and quiver has definitely seen some real use and it shows it's real character. This bow case and quiver was acquired from a private collection in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
