1917 Antique Morongo Mission Indian Oval Basket Riverside Califorina Provenance. Measures 7.5 x 5.25 x 2.25 inches and weighs about 3 ounces. Condition: Well it is 102 years old now. Was a wedding present to my grandparents, the year 1917 is stitched into the bottom, and that is very in keeping with the family origin of a relative in California sent it to them in Colorado.

I know my great-aunt (grandfather's sister) had moved to Riverside California prior to 1917. It is coming uncoiled on the top edges and is dry but still pliable, it doesn't crack and flexes when slightly pushed. Still tightly coiled, and the weaving pattern is consistent with this origin. I have NEVER tried to clean this basket. The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is a federally recognized tribe the Morongo -- although lumped in with Mission Indians were never part of the Spanish Mission Syste.

Reservation is was created in 1876 and is located in Riverside County, California. I can NOT attribute this to a particular weaver, however there are examples of oval baskets made by the Morongo during this time period. The 1917 is in colored grass that was added after the basket was completed.

19 is one color and 17 is another. I will write a letter of provenance regarding that it has been in my family for 102 years and that oral tradition coupled with research strongly indicates I have the Morongo Band as the weavers.
