Vintage Navajo Sterling Concho belt. This is an authentic VINTAGE concho belt.
Conchos are Sterling silver with copper belt loops/straps on the back. There are 15 total Conchos, including the buckle. Silver has acquired a dark patina. Belt is black leather and is somewhat thin. Concho Size: 1.25+" x 1".
Belt size: approx 43" with holes as 29.5", 31" & 38". Total weight (Conchos & leather): 83.8g. Conchos are not signed nor are they marked as Sterling (I didn't take each one off to search for a marking). Tests undoubtedly positive for Sterling.Photos give a good indication of sizes, please see all photos. Quarter shown for size reference only. Sterling is required by law to be marked "sterling" or "925".
It was primarily used for gifts and personal use, as well as bartering. Once the bartering eventually progressed into pawning, the government recognized the art jewelry as having cash value and therefore was required to be marked "sterling".
The Native American artists slowly began marking the metal content in the 1930's and by the 1940's & 50's, it became common practice, so this piece likely predates that timeframe.
