A very rare old Northwest Coast Tsimshian Indian lidded pictorial hand woven basket dating from the early 1900's. The basket is finely woven from split and dyed spruce root and bark with a false imbricated design done in yellow dyed bear grasses. The design features three birds and trapezoid patterns encircling the periphery and subtle flying geese design on the lid.The basket measures 5 1/3" D and stands 3 2/3" tall and is in very good condition with no splits, damages or repairs noted. Just a great patina from great age. Tsimshian baskets are some of the rarest of Northwest Coast basketry and the pictorial ones being the most highly sought after. This museum quality basket will make a fine addition to anyone's collection.
