A very fine old Northwest Coast Tlingit Indian lidded basket dating from the very early 1900's. The basket is very finely woven (approx 30-34 stitches per inch) from split spruce root with the complex false imbricated design from natural dyed bear grasses. The design features akey fret design on lid and periphery. The basket measures 4 1/2" D and stands 3 1/2" tall and is in excellent condition with no splits or repairs noted. Just a great patina from great age.Tlingit baskets are noted for the very finest of weaves which makes them some of the most highly prized baskets in the world. This museum quality basket will make a fine addition to anyone's collection.
