VERY EARLY MAINE PASSAMAQUODDY DECORATED BIRCH BARK BERRY BASKET - VG COND. An early 20th century or late 19th century birch bark berry basket from the Passamaquoddy Native American tribe of Northeastern Maine. In the traditional truncated rectangular conical form, it is decorated in the simple abstract manner associated with early examples of decorated birch bark work. It is sewn with spruce root, with a rim of bundled sweet grass bound with spruce root.It is 5 3/4" square at the base, 5" diameter at the top, and is 6 1/2 tall. Structurally, the basket is sound and tight.
The surface clearly and attractively shows significant age. The binding is damaged at two short spots on the rim. The surface plies are worn through on one corner and at a spot on the bottom, exposing much lighter bark. One of the attachment rings for a strap is missing. Books will be mailed Media rate in the US, unless otherwise requested.
