STONE BOAT-EFFIGY / MORTAR-PESTLE, CATALINA ISLAND, CALIFORNIA, 19th C. Find
In the late 1800s near Little Harbor along the western side of the island, a pit filled with stone mortars was uncovered. This find led to multiple, amateur digs along the harbor sand. The effort was rewarded with this massive, unusual and completely unique effigy stone in the shape of a long boat, though some who have examined this strange artifact are convinced it is an elongated mortar as the associated roundish hand-grind stone was found with it. This massive stone piece has resided in a Long Beach home for the past 134 years until now/. Viewed from the side there is a slight upturn along one end. An enormous amount of effort went into extracting the inner rock and then, astonishingly, smoothing it down. This latter fact may preclude the artifact being used as a mortar though that still leaves the round hand stone to explain. Perhaps the stone represents something other than a grinder? The prehistoric, indigenous people of Catalina were a mysterious lot who carved many similarly smoothed whale and fish effigiesno doubt totems for good fishing. This odd stone is one of the grandest and more mysterious items yet acquired. It is my belief that it is a stone carved, boat effigy. Burying this type of artifact in the sands along a natural harbor makes perfect sense if one is keen on appeasing the spirits for good fishing.

Dings, abrasion scratches along bottom, nicks/dents along both ends. A bit of Catalina background facts may help put this astonishing artifact into context.

Catalina Island, off the west coast of southern California has long been a mysterious place. Rediscovered by the Wrigley family in the late 1800s, throughout the 1920s and 1930s it became a haven for movie stars and vacationing elite. Often shrouded in marine fog, when revealed, the island juts out of the ocean like a sleeping dragon.

For centuries the original native islanders were in control of soft stone quarries (known as steatitelapis ollaris) from which they carved decorative, useful and mystical images that were traded to mainland peoples. Rarely did the recipients of these beautifully carved items sail to Catalina, for the islander were known as shamans, seers, people who conversed with demons. The Catalina islanders worshipped a sun god known as Chinigchinich.

The firstish explorers refer to this god in frightening terms. They mentioned seeing a large circle of standing stones somewhere in the middle of the island.

In the center of this ritualistic circle was a wooden image of a hideous idol with wide, staring eyes. On the breast of this god was a painting of the sun and on the back, the moon. At its base were many images of children. Not far from the location of this artifact, back in the 1930s a researcher uncovered a gigantic stone bowl with a child buried within it! Perhaps this stone effigy of a boat has something to do with that incredulous discovery!

The size and shape of this find necessitates double boxing and much packing material. The initial listing represents the complete unique nature of this artifact. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Catalina ancient past.
