Rare Nez Perce Antique Colville Photo Plate Native American Copper Indian War

Parting with several rare antique pieces of art, pottery, books on ancient civilizations and historical collectibles. This is a circa 1890s to 1905 scarce copper photographic plate depicting captives of the last Indian War - the Nez Perce War following the final Bear Paw Battle after relocation to Colville Reservation in Washington state near Spokane. The Nez Perce are also known as the Nimiipuu. The photographer is Edward Latham who arrived at Colville in 1890 (the photographer and those pictured confirmed by Washington State University archives collection which holds a reverse photo made from this photogravure with identification).

The man in the back is Yat-ah-mo-set or Yet-ti-mo-chet (AKA Charlie Wilpochen - English name), son of Chief Showaway who participated with Chief Joseph in the conflict over thousands of miles. Hundreds of women (including the two shown in this photogravure plate) and children endured severe hunger and extremes of weather. US General Howard, General Miles, and General Sherman were involved in the pursuit and capture, and the courteous behavior by the Native Americans being forced off their land led to a large outcry from the public.

A great gathering of people greeted them and a feast was put on for them by one of the nearby communities after their capture and before being led off to prison forts on horseback and by train. The women in the photo were either already his wives or were widows (as a result of the battle) who became his wives, of which he had at least three others according to Washington State University and Native American organization archives. A wonderful piece of history! The description should have said the conflict was over a thousand miles (not over thousands of miles - it was about 1,200 miles to be more precise).
