RARE Antique CREE Indian Painted PARFLECHE with tree branch frame, Canada
RARE Antique CREE Indian Painted PARFLECHE with tree branch frame, Canada. RARE Antique CREE Indian Painted Parfleche on Frame from Canada.

Antique Cree Indian painted parfleche on a tree-branch frame. The paint and images are still very clear and distinct. You'll note that there are a number of important images to native people including the buffalo, bow and arrow, an eagle, a long snake with it's tongue out, an ancient red symbol meaning the 4 directions or whirling logs.

Note that recent history has severely distorted this image, but it dates back thousands of years. There are also 4 circles in a square geometric design. The parfleche has some issues and you'll note the tears that have been repaired (not by us), there are some small holes and a tear at the bottom. This is an old, and rare item especially with the symbolic images.

The parfleche itself is approximately 41" across and 31" tall. It is also very stiff.

The molded/bended tree-branch frame is about 45" across and 36" deep. It's sewn with sinew. It doesn't have a number, but my mom recently said that she recalls my dad getting this from from his friend Albert Chatsis, a member of the Poundmaker reserve (Cree nation) in Saskatchewan and got it sometime in the 1970s. I remember this being in the house forever and don't know it not being there. It sat in the rumpus room for decades.

My dad collected a number of items from Mr. Chatsis and are indicated in the individual listings. Chatsis comes from a distinguished line of Cree being a direct descendant of the famous Chief Big Bear (his great grandfather). My dad was a long-time (50 years) collector of native and fur trade items.

He was a historian / archaeologist and wrote and published many articles on the Fur Trade and Native artifacts. All of these items are from his collection.

Our specialty is items of Plains, Plateau, Sub-Arctic and Arctic people as well as Fur Trade - specifically, HBC. International buyers note that brokerage and other charges will be applicable, so, keep that in mind.

If you would like to use an alternate method, please let us know. Note that it has become necessary for JoysJewelz to employ a number of sophisticated security devices for identification and fraud prevention purposes. Unfortunately, this has become necessary due to the number of scammers/bait & switch artists operating on the internet. None of these methods affects the product in any way.
