The Shield itself is made from thick hide likely buffalo and has 2 wooden handles likely fashioned from limbs attached with sinew in a cross position on the back of the shield. The original paint is still visible on the front of the shield. It depicts a large circle in the middle surrounded by 10 smaller circles. The meaning of this design is unknown but it certainly makes a beautiful work of art. It also has 4 feather drops still attached.I would estimate the piece to be made around the late 19th C (late 1800's) and was likely used up through the early 1900's as well. It does show signs of heavy wear but overall it is still very solid and in great condition.
