Precontact 17th or 18th C. 16 inch Northwest Coast Shaman figure, in a trance state with exposed ribs and tip of tongue; in the same pose and position as the NWC prehistoric stone seated human figure sculptures, with a bowl between his feet.
Has residue of bear hide originally glued on as hair, with ears like a bear, legs and body engraved with texture to imitate bear skin. Wardwell, Tangible Visions shows three of these carved in the 19th C.
The wood is reddish brown very heavy alder burl which has been selectively paint to allow the highlights to show the wood. From behind the figure wears a loin cloth and the spinal column is carefully delineated.
This has the quality and detail of the pieces in his NWC collection. I have added pictures to show the seated human figures and images of similar statutes in the AMNH. Guaranteed authentic and as described.
