Pipe Stone Duck Effigy, Massive Ross County, Ohio
2 lbs 11.1 oz. This is one of the LARGEST stone effigy pipes yet acquired. It was obtained from an Ohio estate sale back in the 1970s. This rather large pipe was clearly used for special, perhaps ceremonial purposes. It's massive size strongly suggests such. It would be used with a reed inserted into the mouth hole as shown in the photos this is a modern cane-reed inserted to show how it was used; the reed is NOT ancient.... Minor dings, scratches throughout the piece. Clear extraction marks are evident within smoke hole. Ducks were a very important food source for prehistoric Native Americans. Their abundance contributed to their seasonal survival. Carved from a light black stone, this effigy-pipe artifact shows a floating-swimming duck/wings back in almost a decoy mode. A prominent beak/head protrude from a large-breasted base. The bottom shows pitting/decomp, perhaps from soil mix.
Minor dings, scratches throughout as well as clear extraction marks within the smoke hole. One can only guess at the rituals this ancient pipe has seen--and for what reason/events? Such is lost in prehistory. The item "PIPE STONE DUCK EFFIGY, MASSIVE ROSS COUNTY, OHIO" is in sale since Monday, September 05, 2016.
