PIPE SEA LION-EFFIGY, HEAVY! CHUMASH, CAMBRIA, CALIFORNIA 19th Century Find
CHUMASH, CAMBRIA, CALIFORNIA 19th Century Find. In the late 1800s, many stone artifacts were uncovered along the southern banks of Santa Rosa Creek, Cambria, near the outlet to the ocean, approximately near where Shamel Community Park is presently located. This astonishingly HEAVY sea lion-effigy pipe was found at that time and has rested in a private collection for decades. The listed artifact has multiple dings/nicks, and abrasion scratches along the bottom, inner rim area and near the mouth-reed opening. Smoke bowl extraction chips are present. Nice patina still visible along areas. The ancient Chumash lived along the coast and utilized the ocean for food, including those ferocious sea lions. This artifact is clearly an impressive example of their skill. In ancient times sea lions were an even greater presence California coastline near Cambria and the current Moonstone beach. Small effigy pipes are well known among the Chumash as are sea-animal carvings. On Santa Catalina island to the south, many whale-effigy / seal carvings have been unearthed over the decades. This is an interesting and excellently formed effigy pipe uncovered in the late 19th century.
