BUFFALO, RATTLESNAKE, Upper Sun River area, MONTANA; Contact Period. 8 lbs 12.6 oz. This intriguing petroglyph came out of an old Missoula Montana private collection that I came across while doing field work on my Mysterious Places series. Descendants of the initial collector said the rock art came from a cave in.Upper Sun River area of west Central Montana. This petroglyph appears to be part of a larger rock panel, the piece listed here apparently taken from such. Noticeable, uneven side notches, chinks and discoloration are evident throughout the piece. Buffalo petroglyphs are rather prevalent in the Upper Sun River region, but most are not as emotive as this piece. Which leads us to suspect that this particular piece of rock art was developed AFTER contact with white trappers/explorers/settlement ranchers. The style strongly suggests such. From Lewis and Clarks first foray into the Montana area and throughout the 1840s, many easterners found their way to the region, interacting with local tribes, particularly with respect to buffalo hunting. Wood cutting in the Sun River region began sometime in the 1860swhich led to many ecological changes in the little Rocky Mountain region. It is suspected that this fine piece of native rock art was done sometime in the 1800s, reflecting an intrusion of different cultural elements into native design.
