This is a spectacular and rare Navajo medicine mans necklace which dates to the 1870s possibly older! THIS IS A RARE, AUTHENTIC & ANTIQUE SPECIMEN..
ITS NOT A VINTAGE NECKLACE LIKE THE MAJORITY OF SQUASH BLOSSOM TYPE NECKLACES WHICH DATE TO THE 1950s/60sIT EVEN PREDATES THE OLDER SQUASH BLOSSOM NECKLACES FROM THE LATE 19. Beautifully constructed with natural turquoise, malachite, silver, bear claws and bear bones. UNLIKE ITS LATER COUNTERPARTS WHERE THE TURQUOISES WERE INLAID/SET INTO SILVER.. THE OLDER SPECIMENS TURQUOISES ARE FREE (like this specimen).. ALSO, THE NECKLACE IS SINEWAND..
A SMALL CORD OF SINEW WITH ORGANIC SAP/GLUE WAS USED TO ATTACH AND SECURE THE SMALLER TURQUOISE TO THE MALACHITE PENDANT! NATURALLY OCCURING DEPOSITS OF MALACHITE , LIKE TURQUOISE, ARE FOUND IN THE SOUTH WESTERN REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES. A VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT OLD NAVAJO ARTIFACT!Ex- Santa Fe (New Mexico) collection for many years. Ex New York collection of rare Native arts.
