Fred Twigger; Native American expert wrote: Scholars started noticing, in the 1930's and 40s, that some Eastern Woodland Native Americans would use the same type of embellishments, and designs, over and over again.
When pieces were traced, and found to be attributed to a certain individual; some sort of ownership mark, or design pattern, specific to that individual appeared on different types of objects attributed to that Indian. Weapons tacking, tally marks, and high relief carving and etchings, even certain designs in bead and quill work, can be attributed to a certain specific individual Native American Indian which are considered as being signatures. This mid-19th century weapon has been carved from one piece of root burl wood and shows exceptional craftsmanship.
The war club shows traces of mineral yellow ochre and black paint on the ball head. The haft is adorned with brass trade tacked designs and has a pierced hole below the gripping section. The pierced hole most likely held a beaded drop with feathers or a hide wrist thong at one time. The brass tacked design is most likely the signature from the Indian Warrior. Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned collector and foremost expert on war clubs and tomahawks, Mark Francis.
