A wonderful antique basket, a top piece from our personal collection. We have owned it for 40 years. The burden basket was the wheelbarrow of the culture - except without wheels and handles. It was used to carry whatever might need carrying, from gathered nuts and berries to firewood to whatever.
It was carried on the back, in the case of the Pomo, by use of a separate wide sash or net around the middle of the basket connected to or part of a woven belt across the head of the woman using it. Burden baskets of some other tribes had straps incorporated into the basket. These baskets are among the most prized for most Indian basket collectors. We commissioned a'retired' Indian trader to find one for us when we began to collect seriously in the late 60s. Pomo burden baskets epitomize the idea of incorporating art into everyday items and daily life.
This one is an attractive, large example - approximately18" across and 18" on the sides. Two pictures show the broken stitches in the bottom.
Otherwise, quite good condition for the age. These are uncommon and hard to come by. The item "MUSEUM Native American Antique Pomo Burden Basket.18x18" is in sale since Saturday, August 3, 2019.
