These stone items would be carried in small leather pouches and used when needed. They were NOT used for utilitarian/food preparation. The mortar has discolorations as well as a few abrasion scratches as does the pestle. This set as well as others listed here are marvelous examples of a personal stone item that was part of the larger culture that existed near the coastal region of ancient Santa Barbara.
