Pierced crucifix and stars in the head. The crucifix shows the influence of Christianity on the tribes of North America. The shoulders of the hawk are engraved with hash marks.
On the underside of the eye, you can see the forged seam. Ash haft is original to the head. The brass tacks are original old tacks with square shanks. All along the haft are sporadic ceremonial file branding marks made by placing a file or rasp in the fire until it was bright red and then burning the file into the haft. This was done for aesthetic "looks" and ceremonial purposes.
A single shoulder hole is seen for attaching a drop or beads. VERY NICE patina all over, really shows its age! The large unusual style head is very desirable.
Conservatively dated to 1840 but may be earlier. The haft of the tomahawk is measuring 23 7/8 long. Please ask any questions you may have.
