This axe like other similar objects were used also as pipe to seal armistices and peaces. In the following close ups one can see, beside the great patina of age, the small hole that runs along the handle (stoppered with the little protruding plug on the superior side) that was used to aspire the smoke, wihile the cylindrical back of the blade worked as a chamber of the pipe.
