Lakota Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk 1860-1890 ca
Tomahawk with hand forged iron blade. The handle is decorated with brass nails and has a g. The blade is very particular, composed of different layers beaten and fixed together with a brass rivet, and decorated with a heart shaped hole framed by a thin engraving. This axe like other similar objects were used also as pipe to seal armistices and peaces. In the following close ups one can see, beside the great patina of age, the small hole at the bottom, with some tiny cracks, that was used to aspire the smoke, while the cylindrical back of the blade worked as a chamber of the pipe.
