This fine early example is what is referred in the literature to a "trade pipe" , see the publication "Magic Leaves " chapter 18 pages 165-174 for like examples. Figure 177 on page 168 is most likely done by the same master hand as this offered example.
This pipe features wonderful finely sculpted imagery featuring a Raven with a Frog on his chest, a grizzly bear devouring a shaman, a small bear at the front. The pipe bowl is the open Raven's mouth and is complete with a bone stem. The pipe measures a nice large and impressive size at 11" L x 3 1/2" high and 1 1/8 wide and is in fine remarkable condition for its age, with no repairs or damages noted. This is the best of the best kind of pipe and comes with a museum display type stand.Argillite is the slate black rock only found in the Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia. All known reserves are the property of the Haida.
The rock is known to have slight color variations mostly black, but with grayish tinge and a red examples are known but infrequent. The stone is this example has a slight grayish green tinge making it an even rarer example. The pipe is fully guaranteed old and original as described.
