A fine older Northwest Coast Salish Indian hand carved and painted Eagle mask dating from the mid to late 1900's. The mask is very finely carved from alder wood and painted in great pigments of black, green , red and yellow to produce a particularly striking mask. Very thinly and deeply carved with large pierced eyes and mouth.Note the fine details and precise carving. The mask measures 9 1/4" x 8 1/2" wide and 6" deep and is simply inscribed "STOMISH to the interior. The Stommish tribe are also known as the Lummi and are located in the Northern Coastal region of Washington state and are linguistically related to the Salish speaking Northwest Coast tribes. The mask shows the art influences of the Northern tribes. A very striking bold mask that will make an impressive display item and a fine addition to anyone's collection.
