A very fine large old Northwest Coast Salish Klickitat or Cowlitz Indian western Washington imbricated hard burden basket dating from the early to mid 1800's. This fine large burden basket is very finely and tightly woven from split cedar bark and root and the imbricated designs from natural bear grass to produce mountain peaks designs, the age and wear from use has worn away the imbrication showing the baskets great age and generations of use. This hard basket is very finely and evenly woven and was made for native use to gather food stuffs such as berries. Note the vegetal fibre loops for attachment of a tump carrying line.
The basket is perfectly portioned and measures a large 14" x 11" at the top and stands 10 1/3" tall and is in good condition for its great age with a small tear noted about 1" long at the top rim. Given the dark patina this is an exceptional early basket and one of the oldest we've ever owned.Note the fancy durable herringbone weave on the top rim edge. The basket is worthy of any museum collection. Please check out other current offerings including a great Tlingit, Haida argillite and Kwakiutl totem poles and some great early Inuit carvings.
