FINE ANTIQUE ORIGINAL NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN HUPA YUROK KARUK BASKET c. Offered here is a superb antique Native American basket woven by the Hupa people of North West California. The basket is of hazel, twined. With beargrass to form the light background, and with maidenhair fern to form the pattern of interlocked grids in black / very dark purple. This pattern is only visible to the exterior however, this being achieved with a complicated half twist overlaying technique used by the legendary peoples.
This basket is of traditional form and was made by and for use by the Hupa people. It was not made for sale to tourists. Although not in perfect condition it is still the most beautiful I have encountered.
The accuracy of construction, fineness of weave and general power. And impact of the pattern clearly identify this example as a museum quality piece. Has a small piece of the rim missing and it could be repaired but, the main thing is that. This is untouched and reflects the baskets history.
This basket has been in a collection since the early 1940's. Diameter at widest point: 7 inches Height: 4.5 inches All items are guaranteed to be genuine and as described.
