Early Ethnographic Large NATIVE AMERICAN Antique PLAINS INDIAN ROACH

This is another wonderful thing out of my parents collection - recently out a 25+ year storage. They acquired this out of a large collection in New England, where they lived, in the early 1950's. I know nothing more about it except it was showcased in a cabinet for years.

A wonderful, large early, Ethnographic, Native Plains Indian head Roach. It has been made out of porcupine guard hair around the woven base, with red dyed deer hair running around the outside of the piece. The base itself, while flattened out, measures a full 13, from the top to the bottom end. While laid out on its side (shown), and NOT flattened, from the top of the porcupine hair to the bottom porcupine hair, measures 20. The length of the porcupine hair is 7 from the base where attached, to the ends.

The length of the deer hair is 2 long. The width of the top of the woven base is 2 3/4" wide, narrowing at the bottom end to 1/2" wide. The base is fully woven and has black thread running up parts of the sides. It has remains of old leather cord on the inside of the bottom, and running through the woven base, in the middle, exposed between the two sections of porcupine (all shown), on the outside.

I assume the deer hair was brighter red when made, and now has faded with age, but is a lovely shade that accents the piece well. The piece is in excellent condition for its age, would be a wonderful addition to any fine collection, shows beautifully, and comes from a smoke free environment.
