What we have here is a. E Pacific Northwest Coast Carved Stone Figurative Bowl or Mortar with.
Collected in the 1890s by Phil Thiemer. Good size at 6 1/4 inches wide by 6 inches long and weighing 3.5 pounds. This is a wonderful piece with nice.Bird form and carved out bowl hollow, top has a smoother porous surface with a sheen possibly from the use of oils as was known to be practiced in some NWC regions. Form and patina suggests possibly from Columbia River area. Piece looks much better in person than in photos as in real life the forms and shapes are more pronounced and the subtle carved details around the eyes are more defined to an up front first hand eye, the surface glare in the photos somewhat washes out some of the clarity of the item. Displays nicely with an attractive presence. This stone piece came from the collection of Phil Thiemer of Alert Bay British Columbia who gathered a large collection of Native stone items from various locations along the Pacific Northwest. The majority of his stone objects were collected in the 1890s before there was any real interest in such native items.
He came from an interesting family, his brother supplied the stone bricks that built the historic Empress Hotel in Victoria BC... Stone seemed to run in the family.
This collection of stone artifacts was passed down through the family eventually to his grandson in Kamloops BC who parted with much of the collection. The stone items are from an old collection gathered in the late 1800s. The stone pieces from this collection are Conservatively dated 1500 to 1890 but some may be older than this as NWC stone items have been made for 1000s of years...
