BOAT EFFIGY SEA SERPENT NORTHWESTERN BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, 19th Century Acquisit
SEA SERPENT; NORTHWESTERN BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, 19. This fascinating wooden boat came from a very old Pacific Northwestern collection of artifacts from the Puget Sound area. Descendants of the collector said their great grandfather acquired it in a trade on Bainbridge island around the late 1890s or so. The wooden boat was clearly a small sea monster effigy item probably used in various ceremoniesperhaps for good hunting while at sea. Wooden canoes were extensive used for transport up/down the coast by early Pacific Northwestern people. In fact they were a necessity for trade, war and for enjoying the rich bound from the sea. The early Suquamish fished for salmon and harvested shellfish in local waters. The artifact was carefully carved and was incised with repeating triangular forms around the perimeter. The front has a carved sea serpent head while the rear shows the taila viable indication of the appeasement of this boat upon the monster for those within the craft.

Minor dings and abrasion marks. Extraction cuts are clearly visible.

In all a beautiful and carefully preserved wooden artifact from the pre-white settler indigenous population of the island/region.
