Greetings Here we offer for your consideration A "TRUE" Antique Mountain Man/Plains Indian Broad Axe "Trade Piece". This 1 of a kind, and very rare Broad Axe. Museum documentation/records say, that is was once traded to A Plains Indian, a tribe member, of The Dakota's.
Trade was quite common and this is how the hand engraved buffalo on the blade, and goose head handle came into play. At the end of the handle(front & back) is a "Carved Goose Head" a old brass tack as a eye and has a carved opening, portraying its beak. On the face of the axe blade, just about in the center, a primitive style Buffalo has been hand carved/etched INTO the blade.
A curators note indicates that it is believed to be Circa. A note, from the Museum in S. Stating that the blade etching and carved "Goose Head" handle is that of the "Dakota tribe". Known as skilled hunters of BOTH creatures. The Buffalo is quite sacred and respected by the tribe.
Also adding that trading was common practice among the mountain men, fur trappers, and other Plains Tribes. In VERY NICE CONDITION for its age and its purpose that it was intend for. There are "2" brass tacks lost long ago and were replaced with a primitive looking nail, where the axe head inserts into the wooden handle. The goose head carving at the very end of the handle has a brass tack for an eye. A beautiful patina has formed over the axe blade and handle from age.
Enduring decades of being exposed to harsh & extreme elements. The buffalo etching has worn abit, but still can be seen without any problems.
A beautiful dark chocolate color has naturally occurred to the blade from age. There are a few spots of heavy pitting and signs it was used ALOT! The blade is firm in the tang, not much wiggle. The edge is very sharp with nice edging. The handle has NO breaks or damage.
There are many light scratches from front to back. I could find NO blacksmith mark but that may have rubbed off decades ago. A VERY RARE, BEAUTIFUL Broad Axe with "Double Sided" Goose head handle and hand etched buffalo effigy blade to add to your collection. The entire piece weighs approx. 8 1/2 pounds Measures approx. The blade itself measures 8 inches wide & 11 1/4 inches high. The thickness of the blade is roughly 1 1/4 inches thick.
