Here is a fascinating old curiosity from the Plains Indian. I believe the decoration which is like a miniature blanket strip was designed to be mounted on the upper breast of a tunic, war shirt or dress. The fine old trade beads are stitched to old red wool/ trade cloth and are have porcupine quilled wheels. This looks to be 19th century and possibly Sioux but I have no solid info on it so i can't promise.
As you see the piece has been through a period of poor storage and it has grime, fading, color bleed and moth bites.... Still the wonderful piece shines forth from it's wounds and begs to be framed. I was thinking lint specks could be taken from the edges of the wool to plug little holes. Mounting it on red paper would help make irregular edges and holes disappear. I think some areas of stain such as the ribbons might respond well to gentle cleansing. The intriguing piece is sure to please any collector.
