This is one of a number of interesting items fresh out of an old New England estate that were collected in the early 20th century. Offered is a striking Native American squash blossom necklace. It is of the usual form, with a naja pendant, but is made almost entirely of shell.
The pendant is carved from the outer rim of a red spiny oyster shell inlaid with turquoise. The necklace is mostly heishi shell beads spacing decorative spines, of shell, stone and wood. I it almost like the primitive prototype of a classic Squash Blossom necklace. I have not identified the origin, but it was collected in 1908 on the same trip as the labeled Aztec pottery I have listed. There is a wonderful old sinew repair to the pendant, so the necklace must predate its collecting date.
Otherwise excellent condition with no apparent breaks or losses. The necklace measures 24 in length. The item "Antique Native American Spiny Oyster Shell Squash Blossom Necklace" is in sale since Saturday, November 05, 2016.
