This is a primitive Native American rawhide Hoop Shield that dates to the later half of the 1800's. It is made of hide that has been stretched over a wooden hoop that is covered with cloth. It has a large leather strap that was likely salvaged from something else at the time.
Remnants of the original paint is still visible and it depicts a large black bird surrounded by red and blue. It has a large hair drop that stretches the length of the Shield.
This piece would have been used for both ceremonial dances and battles as there are many contact marks present. 20" across and over 1" thick. This is certainly a head turner and a wonderful piece to display.
