As you know if you have found anything interesting in our store, we have been collecting baskets, particularly Indian baskets, for 50 years. Antique Apache burden baskets are scarce as hen's teeth. In the late 1800s - 1875 or so, the idea of adding a wire rim around the top to reinforce the ordinary rim became popular for a while. I have never seen one where that idea stood the test of time. As in this one, probably because of the incompatibility of the inflexible wire and the flexible plant material, the stitching holding the wire breaks much sooner than the stitches holding the willow rods.
This one has had a lot of use. It is not one that has just been in somebody's collection for 150 years. The deerskin bottom and the deerskin strings hanging on the sides are deteriorating. There is a big soft spot shown and stains (which is not unexpected when you are carrying berries, meat, whatever needs carrying). The workmanship shows through, as does the pattern in the naturally dyed stripes around the basket. It needs cleaning and humidifying and the deerskin needs something to enhance/preserve the strength it has left. NOTE - I HAVE DONE A LITTLE MORE RESEARCH ON CURRENT PRICES AND REDUCED THE ASKING PRICE AS OF APRIL 18.
