It is an EARLY Native ax that is attached by leather strap/sinew to a carved wood handle. This Beautiful unusual hafted Ax head came from an elderly Ohio owner's estate sale.
Other than it came from an elderly person's estate, I can not tell you any more of it's age or if the handle is original or added later. My guess is it it very old and it looks and feels original.
When I was a kid in the 60s, my great grandfather gave me a similar stone ax head (unhafted) that was in the family for 9 generations. (Our family came from Scotland, via Virginia to create their own town in Ohio).
I still have our ax head as well as many arrow heads/points I found as a child which I display on a tabletop shadow box. These are wonderful pieces of our history and great displays. Not totally sure of age of lashing on stone, but the sinew around lower part of the handle is definitely old and looks/feels original. The upper rawhide looks newer. There is a bit of evidence of original color on the sinew knot on handle which fits perfectly into the carved groove.
The split wood handle is fitted very well to stone ax head. The stone lashing is slightly loose but this is for DISPLAY anyway, not use! Please see pictures for dimensions and condition. The handle wood is a beautiful reddish shade and I suspect the shine is from use and or staining or just the natural color of the wood.
