PETROGLYPH-SECTION, SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO, collected in the 1870s. Weight: 1 lb 14 oz. Another intriguing petroglyph section originally from Southwestern Colorado. This piece of rock art shows a horned animal and a human figure in close proximity. The section is missing part of the animals lower half and appears to have been chinked out of a larger panel. This site acquired this slab-section along with many other pieces of rock art several years ago.
While examining the outbuilding where the artifacts were kept, we noticed this particular slab hanging on a wooden post above the crated stones. Unfortunately, someone had poked a hole through the slab to hang in from a nail! Upon questioning, the descendants claimed their ancestor did so to color up the barn and to insure good hunting nail through animal. Family lore said he heard about such actions from the Indians. That said, the slab has abrasion scratches, dings, chinks, shows evidence of smoothing the edges, andhas a hole in the middle.
The artifact is in the style of petroglyphs quite prevalent throughout the American Southwest, particularly southern Colorado. Soon after discovering the now famous rock overhangs with brick cities within, many local ranchers, cowboys and city folk wandered through the Mesa Verde area in search of souvenirs of the mysterious people who lived in such high places years before. This distressed rock slab is from that time period. The item "ANIMAL-HUMAN PETROGLYPH-SECTION, SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO, collected in the 1870s" is in sale since Sunday, September 04, 2016.
