Approx Age Range: 1000 BCE 200 BCE. The Adena culture was a Pre-Columbian Native American culture that existed from 1000 to 200 BCE, in a time known as the early Woodland Period. The Adena culture refers to what were probably a number of related Native American societies sharing a burial complex and ceremonial system. The Adena lived in a variety of locations, including: Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, and parts of Pennsylvania and New York. This is one of the best Adena pieces I have ever come across in all my years. It is from my personal collection and was found in Southern Ohio in the Hocking Valleys.
The piece is believed to be a ceremonial pipe caved in the shape of a very dramatic skull, that almost appears as an owl as well. The carving, form and overall proportions are incredible. The piece also has a curious groove on the bottom that seems to serve some sort of purpose.
My guess was that it rest comfortably on ones finger, which may have been used fro balance when in use. The piece has a wonderful patina with obvious signs of age and no modern tooling. I have enjoyed this piece for many years but it is time to le it go to a new home.
