Very rare and wonderful, ca1880's Pair of Native American Cheyenne Indian Pictorial Bead Decorated Hide Moccasins from the William Alberta Collection. This outstanding Pair of 19th century Cheyenne Moccasins each measure approx. 10 1/2 long at their stiffened hide / parfleche sole. The decoration is exceptionally beautiful and executed using white, medium blue, white heart red, orange, dark blue and solid red colored beads. Each Moccasin has a bull's-eye type design surmounted by a stylized cross.
These wonderful Cheyenne Indian Moccasins are sinew and thread sewn and feature contiguous cuffs and an applied tongue. The soles are stiffened hide / parfleche and show evidence of good, honest use. The Moccasins offered here are unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. The beadwork is exceptionally beautiful but there is some loss at the toe of each of the Mocs as well as a few other, scattered, small areas of bead loss as can be seen in the scans below. All elements of the Moccasins are original and there has been no repairs or restorations - they are 100% original and 100% beautiful. These Moccasins are originally from the Collection of William Alberta. These Moccasins have more significantly more damage and wear from use than we originally described. These Mocs were not made for the tourist trade but were well used by a Native American Cheyenne Indian Brave.
There is a tear to the hide on the inner surface of left hand moccasin where the upper meets the sole and there is also a very old repair in this same area. There is also some bead loss in this same area. The right hand Moccasin has some small holes to the hide of the upper in the area adjacent to the line of stitching that attaches the upper to the sole and also at the heel of the upper.
Both Mocs have some at the heel. Please see the scans above for a good representation of the form and condition of the Moccasins.
